Philippine President, Rubio Hold Talks on South China Sea Peace, Security

(MENAFN) Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks early Monday focused on “peace and security” in the disputed South China Sea, according to official communications.

During a phone conversation, both leaders discussed a broad range of bilateral economic and security issues, including efforts aimed at promoting stability in the South China Sea region.

The waters, which are rich in resources, have long been a point of tension between the Philippines and China due to overlapping territorial claims and recurring diplomatic disputes.

The Philippines remains one of the United States’ oldest defense allies in the Asia-Pacific region, bound by a mutual defense treaty.

As stated by the office of the Philippine president, the discussion also covered key regional and economic priorities, along with bilateral trade matters.

Rubio, according to the US State Department, reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to advancing the Luzon Economic Corridor and exploring solutions to regional energy challenges.

The Luzon Economic Corridor is a joint initiative involving the United States, Japan, and the Philippines, as outlined by the US Embassy in Manila.
