Monitoring Body Urges Adherence to Bangsamoro Deal Ahead of Philippine Vote

(MENAFN) The independent Third-Party Monitoring Team (TPMT) on Tuesday called on both sides of the Bangsamoro peace process to reaffirm their commitment to the agreement as elections approach in the southern Philippines later this year, according to reports.

In a statement addressed to Manila and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the TPMT said, “As we approach the September elections and the end of the transition phase, we call on both Parties to demonstrate continued commitment to the implementation of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB).”

The monitoring body, established in Kuala Lumpur in 2013, oversees the implementation of the peace accord signed between the Philippine government and the MILF, which aims to maintain stability in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

The region, home to around 5 million people—most of them Muslim—has been undergoing a political transition under the agreement.

In its ninth public report on the peace process, the TPMT also emphasized the importance of preserving trust, stating, “It is particularly important to uphold mutual respect as a core value. Trust which has been built over years is very easy to destroy but difficult to rebuild. It has to be continuously nourished,” according to reports.
