Sara Duterte Enters Race for Philippines Presidency in 2028
The 47-year-old made the declaration amid a tense political rivalry with current President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. Although the vote is still two years away, presidential contenders in the Philippines—where elections are largely personality-driven—often start campaigning years in advance.
“I offer my life, my strength, and my future in the service of our nation,” Duterte said. “I am Sara Duterte. I will run for president of the Philippines.”
Duterte, the daughter of former president Rodrigo Duterte, and Marcos previously ran on the same ticket in the 2022 election, winning by a landslide. However, their alliance quickly fractured as both pursued separate political goals.
The feud escalated in March 2025, when Marcos permitted the International Criminal Court to arrest Sara Duterte’s father. Rodrigo Duterte is currently detained at The Hague, awaiting trial for crimes against humanity related to his violent war on drugs.
Two months later, a mid-term legislative election—often viewed as a gauge of public support—saw candidates endorsed by the Duterte family defeat those backed by Marcos.
Recently, members of the Catholic clergy filed an impeachment complaint against the vice-president over alleged corruption, which she denies.
